Josh took the bus for the first time today. I insisted that Soren, Zea and I follow him "like spies" because we were not allowed to interact with Josh. We're terribly UNCOOL, btw. Anyway, I can understand, but I wasn't 100% confident in Josh's ability to navigate the transit system. So with detailed instructions in hand, he set out. We did follow him. As far as the next stop, anyway...one transfer involved. He then got on the next bus and made his way to school.

His teacher just called to tell me Josh had "misplaced" the envelope with the instructions on how to get home. Sigh. This I'm not surprised about. One day he won't need those instructions, but today, he'd be lost without them. So he had his teacher call and I dictated instructions to her. But they all look like scribbles to Josh...generalities don't work, he needs CONCRETE: "Turn left as you get off the bus" because he doesn't know his directions (and frankly, I can still get turned around downtown). So I had him talk to me and I dictated directions like that to him. He repeated them to me, so I know he has it right. I think he'll be ok...as long as he doesn't lose his fare saver card or his directions! Hopefully he'll still have our phone numbers just in case!

So is this a good idea, this letting Josh ride the bus? I'm not sure. It sure scares the hell out of me. He needs to get far enough on Georgia street to recognize where he is and he could walk home (don't ask, but he has done it before)...but if he is too far West...well, he will be a bit confused. It will be a learning process that I hope he can handle! I feel fairly confident that he can...but he DID lose his directions once already. Good lord!

I'm totally freaked out. Come on.
