Nov. 26th, 2006 08:42 amOn US Thanksgiving I made a roast chicken, stuffing, potatoes, gravy and broccoli. A mini tribute to the Thanksgiving south of the border.
I went to yoga that morning. After I picked up Shane and the kids, I burst into tears and HAD to make the chicken for dinner. I missed "home" so badly! I didn't even miss my family, just the tradition and the temperature. Now if the weather would just turn about 5 degrees colder and REALLY snow I'd be done with my Minnesota lust right quick...but NO, it's slushing and raining and generally is icky making me miss MINN all the more.
Friday was spent grocery shopping in abundance (I'm great at receiving abundance, but I need to work on sharing and giving a bit more, methinks). Josh was sick with the life force sucking virus...the one that made our spine ache and our eyesockets hurt.
Ah, go back to Thursday...NO, Wednesday...Soren broke out in spots! BOOM, and he was covered from head to toe in red spots. Turns out it was Roseola. This explains his high fever Monday night/Tues. morning. Spots for about 24 hours, the didn't bother him and he's fine. He has, however, hit the whining, crying and temper tantrum phase full on. Fun times ;)
Josh's birthday on Saturday. Twelve. OMG. Glorious. It snowed on Saturday (it snowed the day after he was born the year he was born...not surprising it being MN and all...but...awwww!).
6 friends and Josh watched movies and played video games and put together his build your own light saber (which is "the best present EVER mom!"). We used the common room like a rec room. It worked GREAT! It was so sweet to see him with kids he knew from different places. Two are his bandmates (they are "The Flying Pigs"), one a carpool mate, one his best friend, one a girl who is a friend from last year mostly and one a friend from the first school he went to in Vancouver. They all know Josh in a slightly different context and it was fun to watch him and them negotiate those relationships and roles.
Josh requested waffles for dinner...SHANE's waffles. So daddy-o mixed up a triple batch of the best waffles EVER and I made veggie and meat sausages. Real maple syrup, butter, whipped cream and berries filled their bellies quickly. For dessert Josh requested angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries (hmmm, didn't we just have that for dinner?)
Everyone went home and our house is cleaner than it was when we started. How did that happen? OH WAIT, I have the best husband EVER because we are truly PARTNERED in the care of the home during parties. He does dishes, he cooks, he mops...he does what needs to be done when it needs to be done. As it should be, of course, but still novel to me having grown up with Larry, who knew how to make toast and cereal.
Josh said I wasn't allowed to do goody bags OR balloons! Or streamers! ??? He was "too old" for that. Though this morning he said his party was "kind of quiet" without the balloons. I'm not sure what that means. It WAS a different party than he'd had. A preteen party that reminded me of my youth. No balloons???? I went along with that, but I did COOL goodie bags. Into a ziplock sandwich bag (because I wouldn't dare buy real goodie bags) I put one Charlie's Chocolate factory chocolate frog, one chocolate thank you coin, a tootie fruitie candy stick and a sponge bob water game (reminiscent of the water basketball of old) Just enough, but not too much.
It was a more tame party. Less wrestling (though still some), less goobery behaviour and more "trying to be almost teenagers" They were great fun to watch and interact with.
As if Josh turning twelve wasn't enough, Zea just completed her very first sleep over at a friends house. EEEK! I can't wait to hear how it went. She will be ten feet tall all day today, I'm sure. BTW, she's not allowed to grow any more than that...just for today!!!
