I made butter today. Yup. I did.
About 2 or 3 weeks ago a friend posted in her blog about the wonderul world of butter making. She was all rah rah about using organic whipping cream in order to make cheap organic butter. I'm not an organic girl myself, so I tucked the info into my brain and went about my life. At the store today, I encountered whipping cream on sale for .80 per 500 mls. That's $1.60 for a pound of butter y'all! Butter is 4 dollars per pound for the cheap stuff sometimes 3.50. I don't buy butter much, because I am OK with eating non-hydrogenated nearly-plastic spread (margerine). I could not, however, pass up a pound of butter (or 5) for $1.60. So 10 pints (ok...500mls) later and several hours and I have 5 pounds of butter in my freezer! It was exciting (yeah, I know) and unless there is a deal like it again, I don't think I'll be doing much more butter making. It's great, but it is time consuming. Here is the great site I used to make the butter and then learn a whole lot o-facts I didn't need to know (and won't remember...except for when it will help me at something like Trivial Pursuit). Here is the website from which I gleaned all of my buttery knowledge

I cultured the "buttermilk" with buttermilk I already had and we had AMAZING buttermilk pancakes for dinner with homemade butter and maple syrup. YUMMERS!
