I'm inspired to post, but it is the posting and not the words themselves that are inspiring.  I feel like when I get online after a long day of holiday preparations, I want to be able to sink my teeth into something juicy here on my f-list.  So I'm adding to YOUR f-list so you have something to read when you take your well deserved break.

I just made a yummy pasta salad:  Rotini pasta, cherry tomatoes, black olives, pepperoni, shredded carrot, shredded mozzerella and ranch dressing.  Mmmmm...weird, but so good.

SHHHHH, I bought the kids each a ZEN stone MP3 player (well not Soren, he's getting a train set...like the Brio but NOT a Brio) for Christmas AND guitar hero III (they haven't had one or two, so this is novel).  I'm thrilled to be able to give them things they wanted this year.  I know, I know...things...materialism, etc....but after many years of having super tight Christmases where I knew the kids had more than enough but not quite EXACTLY what they'd asked for...it feels SO GOOD to be able to do that for them this year.  Not to mention that I'm not much on buying toys n things for them the rest of the year.

OMG, Soren is about the cutest 3 year old ever!  He asked Santa for candy and toys and presents.  I can't go wrong!  His favourite things in the world are cars, trains, batman and spiderman.  He's getting a bit of all of that.

I love Christmas.  As much work as it is, it is magickal.  Our tradition starts tomorrow when we will have a relatively relaxing day (though maybe we'll go sledding on Seymour in the am??) and have our Minnesotan dinner of Swedish Meatballs, gravy, mashed potatoes and scalloped corn and sweet soup and sparkling apple juice.  You saw that right, no veggies.  Seriously...my family growing up considered yams and corn vegetables (I know...I know...but it's TRADITION!!).  The only thing missing is the lefse (a potato bread much like a tortilla that you eat with butter and sugar).

After dinner we clean up everything, wash dishes, etc., then open one present each.  We set out cookies for Santa and a carrot for the reindeer and head off in the van to look at Christmas lights.  If it's not raining, I might suggest a nice walk through the neigbourhood instead.  I think that might tire out the kiddies more than a drive.  When we get home it's off to bed with the littles and Josh will watch his movie selection (he is sure he's picked out the gift of DVDs to open on Christmas Eve...shaking and feeling of presents...not to mention all the peeking he's done beforehand...sigh).  After Josh's door is closed and the littles are asleep Shane and I will fill the stockings.  I'm sure I'll hop online and see what is up...though it is likely the posts will be sparse as everyone will be busy with their celebrations.  If I wasn't on call I'd settle in with a spiked nog (brandy is my favourite spike of the nog) but being on call and being on A.D.s doesn't really support a boozey Christmas...which is fine.

Christmas morning we'll wake up as soon as the first kid awakens and drag our butts (not hungover thankfully!) out of bed and open our stockings in the Christmas morning stupor.  The kids excitement is palpable...the grins and squeals...I love that part.  I need to find my frakking camera before then!!!!

Shane is going to make waffles after stocking gifts are opened and I'll make the bacon (and eggs?)  I've got strawberries and whipped cream AND real maple syrup to go on those DELICIOUS waffles.  After the morning gorge and yet another clean up, we'll open the presents to each other that are under the tree.  It's a present extravaganza here on Christmas.  I know a lot of people thing it is gross consumerism...but I just can't care.  I LOVE this tradition.

Later in the afternoon we'll pack up gifts to Shane's family (mom and bro and auntie and uncle) and we'll head to his brother's place.  His mom is making the Christmas dinner this year because I didn't want the job.  After the traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings we'll open MORE presents (see extravaganza).  We'll go home as soon as I can convince Shane it has been long enough.  I know he would love to stay and talk and talk until 11 or so...but the kids will be INSANE by 8:30 and I'm hoping we can be out of there by 9:00pm.

Boxing Day Josh wants to go shopping with his gift cards that he assumes (and rightly so) that he is receiving.  Ugh.  Braving the mall on Boxing Day could be insane...but...I MIGHT  be up for it.  Anyone want to join us?  Sarah?? I mentioned this as a possibility the other night...??

of course, plans are subject to change at the breaking of a water or other imminent labour signs.

I like these traditions, but I'm hoping to add more of my friends and loved ones to the affair next year.  I was planning to invite Jen and Jason and their kids to Christmas Eve dinner...but I just didn't think I could deal with all of the energy...and I'm glad I listened to my gut and decided to have it be just our little nucleus.

I hope you're having a warm and cozy time...if that is what you'd like.  That's what Christmas is about for me.  Warm, cozy, giving, receiving...tons of gaudy lights and decorations and sugary buttery treats and confections that I don't make or eat during the rest of the year.

Some wishes:  I wish I could go out in the middle of a frozen lake, make snow angels and watch the stars.  I wish I could go ice fishing and drink jagermeister with beer chasers.  I wish I could be with my parents and my sister for just 3 hours (they're all in Ft. Meyer's Beach Florida righ tnow) on Christmas Day.

Josh keeps asking me with an incredibly animated voice, "Aren't you just SOOOOOO excited for Christmas Mom?????"  I know he wants me to say YES, YES, I'm soooooooo excited!!!  And I am...but not the same way he is.  I remember how it felt though.  And to be fair, Christmas excitement may not last that much longer for him.

Ok.  Pasta salad has marinated long enough.  Have a good night lj luvs!
